Feature Tour

Grasmere is a Markdown app for the Mac, made for people who write and learn. Here’s what it does, in a few minutes. Each feature links to its guide, for the details.

Rename a document, move it to another folder, or reorganise a whole project in Finder, and every link to it is rewritten to match. You can restructure your documents as your thinking changes, without leaving broken links behind. Every change is listed, with Undo.

Press ⌘K, type a few letters of a document’s name, and the link is made. Rest the pointer on any link to see what’s behind it, so you can check a character’s eye colour or a source’s date without losing your place.

The margin shows what connects

Beside every document, the margin lists the documents that link to it and the documents that mention it by name without a link yet. One click turns a mention into a link. Connections you didn’t know you’d made come to the surface.

Two documents side by side

Hold ⌥ and click a link to open the document beside the one you’re writing. Keep your research or your outline in view while you draft, and edit either side.

Every document as a card

The Index lays out your project as a deck of cards. Step through it in order, or follow the links from one card to the next, and see a long project whole.

Tasks where you wrote them

Tasks are ordinary checkboxes in any document. The Tasks list in the margin gathers them all, by document or by date, and you can tick them off right there, so nothing you promised yourself gets lost in a chapter. Due dates can be changed from a calendar.

Word targets that keep you going

Give a project or a folder of chapters a number of words to reach, and a deadline if you like. From then on, the bar beneath the page shows how far you’ve got, today’s words, and roughly how many a day will get you there in time.

From documents to manuscript

Publish a folder as one PDF, in the order you chose: in standard manuscript format, ready for an agent or publisher, or as a typeset book in your theme’s type. Your project can become a website too.

Focus when you need it

Focus mode hides everything but the page, keeps the line you’re writing in the middle of the window, and fades all but the paragraph you’re in. It’s the quiet room for a difficult scene.

Ask your documents

Ask a question and get an answer drawn from your own documents, with numbered citations that open the passage each came from. It runs on your Mac by default, so your documents stay private.
