Why Grasmere?
Your documents are plain files you own
Every document is an ordinary Markdown file, in a folder you choose. There’s no database, no special syntax and nothing to export, so your documents read just as well in any other editor, in git, or in ten years’ time.
Links that never break
Link one document to another with an ordinary Markdown link. Rename a document or move it to another folder, in Grasmere or in Finder, and every link to it is rewritten to match. Each change can be undone.
Private by design
There’s no account to make and nothing is collected. Ask Your Documents answers questions from your own documents using Apple’s on-device model, so nothing leaves your Mac unless you choose a cloud model with your own key. The AI in Grasmere is opt-in, on your Mac, and out of your way: see AI in Grasmere.
Made for long writing
Set a word target with a deadline and watch the words add up each day. Publish a folder of chapters as a manuscript or a typeset book in one step, and see the whole project as a deck of linked cards in the Index.
Calm on the page
Grasmere sets your words in careful type, with generous margins and the Markdown kept faint. Choose Paper for the day and Slate, Graphite or Soot for the evening, and focus mode fades everything but the paragraph you’re writing.
Capture from anywhere
Press ⌃⌥⌘N in any app, or click the book in the menu bar, and type. Your thought goes into today’s entry in the project you choose, without leaving what you were doing.
Grasmere is on the Mac App Store, for macOS 26 or later.
